Effect or Parental Hen Weight on Hatchabillty, Progeny Perforrnance and Survival Rate in Japanese Quail

Effects of parental hen weight on hatchability, progeny perlormance and survival rate were investigated in Japanese Quail, For these aims, 960 eggs and 714 chicks obtained from 23-weeks old 20 male and 120 female quails reared at the Veterinary Faculty Farm of Selcuk University, Turkey were used. Parental hens were classified as light, control and heavy, While there were not any significant differences among the weight groups in terms of hatchability for fertile eggs and embtyonic mortality. the differences among the groups were significant for total hatchability and fertility rate (P<0.05). High positive and silgnificant correlation were found between the egg weigt and hatching weigh in parental hen weight groups. Correlation coefficients for light, control and heavy groups were determined as 0.891, 0.925 and 0.917 respectively. Regression equation between egg weight and chick hatch weight was found highly significant (P<0.001). Alter third week, live weights of male quails in light, control and heavy groups were similar but live weights of female quails were different ( P< 0.05). The difference among the groups with respect to survival rates was not found significant (P>0.0 5 ). It can be said that the effect of selection of heavy dam quails in broiler and layer stocks on egg weight and produgtion performances in following years was positive.

Gallstone and Treatment with Ursodeoxycholic Acid İn a Dog

In this case report, we aimed to report of clinical, ultra so nog raphical and biochemical findings of naturally occurring radiofucent gallstone and efficacy of treatment with urcedeoxicolic acid in a dog. An 11-years-old. female Collie dog referred with a history of anorexia, lethargy and vomiting was Included in the present article. At physical examination, crania! abdomen pain was detected on palpation. Biochemical analysis of the blood serum revealed urea 28 mg/dl, creatinin 0,9 mg/dl. ALT 50 IU/L, ALP 350 IU/L, AST 300 IU/L. GGT 71 IU/L, total bilirubin 0.5 mg/dl. direct bilirubin 0,4 mg/dl, indirect bilirubin 0.1 mg/dl. cholesterol 350 mg/dl and trigllserid 215 mg/dl. Ultrasonographical examination revealed hyperecogenic liver parenchyma, bile duct and gall bladder wall and inside the bladder a 9 mm diameter radi olu cent mass without acoustic shadowing artifact. Based on clinical, laboratory and ultrasonographical examination, radiolucent gall stone and cholangitis were diagnosed. Therapy included ampicilin+sulbactam at a dosage of 25 mg/kg twice a day i m., for 15 days, metronidazole at the dosage of 10 mg /kg q 12 h, metoclopromide 2 mg/kg i.m., q 12 h, ursodeoxycholic acid at the dosage of 10 mg/kg once a day per orally for 1 month. End of the thirty day hepatic parenchyma and bite ducts were norma! and no mass was detected on the ultrasonographic examination of the bladder. Biochemical analysis revealed ALP 100 IU/L, AST 80 IU/L. ALT 30 IU/L, GGT 7 IU/L, cholesterol 164 mg/dl and trigliserit 145 mg/dl.

Determination of the incidence of embryonic death by means of real-time ultrasound scanning in ewes

In the present study, incidence of embryonic mortality in ewes was determined directly by real-time ultrasonography and indirectly by changes in level of plasma progesterone. Then the results were evaluated. Multiparous Konya Merino ewes (n=60), which were housed under the same conditions, were flushed and naturally mated between September 17 and October 7. The first pregnancy detection was done transrectally 18 days after mating by using linear array probe, 5 MHz real-time ultrasonography. Ewes, which were confirmed pregnant on day 18, were repeatedly examined by ultrasonography for pregnancy 22, 26, 30, and 34 days after mating. Blood samples were collected simultaenously with ultrasonography and measurements of plasma progesterone with enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Of 73 ewes, 60 ewes were pregnant and 79 embryos were detected and embryonic mortality rate was 8.9 % (7 of 79 embriyos) on day 18. Of these embryonic mortalities, 2 on day 22, 4 on day 26 and 1 on day 34 happened. As a result, there is noticeable significant embryonic loss in late embryonic period. Measurements of plasma progesterone levels are not sufficient to determine embryonic mortality. However, ultrasonography is a dependable method to determine the time and the incidence of the embryonic death.

The Evaluation of the Prevalence of disease among the Cats and Dogs Admitted to Clinics of Veterinary Faculty, Mustafa Kemal University (2003-2006)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of the disease among the dogs and cats admitted to the clinic of Mustafa Kemal University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine between 1st January 2003 and 31st December 2006. Clinical examination of the 76 cats and 366 dogs were performed These animals were evaluated in breed, sex, seasons, clinical departments, and the diseases. It was observed that the disease in cats and dogs occurred due to seasonal effects (p<0.0l). and the diseases in dogs and cats commonly observed in spring and summer seasons. When the distributions of the patients admitted to Departments in Veterinary Faculty Clinics was evaluated, the patients were commonly brought to Department of Internal Medicine (n=202,46%). these were followed by Department of Surgery (n=192, 43%) and Department of Gynecology and Reproduction (n=48, 11%). Diseases were most commonly detected between 0-12 months aged in cats and dogs. Although the dogs admitted to Veterinary Faculty Clinics were male (n=224, %61). female cats (n=49, 64%) mostly brought to all the departments. Digestive system diseases were most commonly observed in cats and dogs, and these were followed by respiratory and orthopedic disturbances such as trauma, fracture and lameness. In conclusion, it was thought that the evaluation of the diseases observed In cats and dogs In this study will help to make the owners conscious of cats and dogs diseases in this region.

Seroprevalaııce of Brucella ovis infection in Rams from some flocks in the Provinces Konya and Sivas

Brucella ovis causes epididymitis in rams, abortions in ewes and an increased neonatal mortality in lamb. Because of atypical clinical findings of B. ovis infections in rams that can be shared with some other genital infections, difficulties with isolation and identification of the causative and its time-consuming pocedure, serology is widely used to diagnose the disease in the field A number of 264 blood serum samples collected from 35 flocks were examined by Modified Micro Plate Agglutination Technique (MPAT) in which an antigen prepared from B. can is NCTC 10854 in order to determine the frequency of the disease in the flocks from provinces Konya and Sivas. Of the sera, 149 (56,4%) were positive and 115 (43,6%) negative. Seropositives for the flocks from Konya and Slvas were 35,5% and 46,6%, respectively. We believe that the higher infection rate in the flocks needs to be further evaluated with taking a criteria to account that it might be endemic if so which could only be determined by annual examinations of the flocks from now on.

Evaluation of Aerobic Bacteria Isolation from Reproductive Track of Healthy Bitches

This study was performed for isolation and identification of the aerobic bacteria from materials which collected from the 66 healthy breeding bitches' vagina in different race, age and estrous cycle at the Military Veterinary School and Training Center Commandership Gemlik/ Turkey. After the samples taken, vaginal cytology is applied to each dog to determine dog's estrous cycle period. Seventy five microorganisms isolated from 62 (%93.94) of 66 bitches in different races. Twenty E.coli (26.67%). 20 Staphylococcus spp. (26,67%), 12 Salmonella spp. (16,0%), 5 Candida spp, (6,67%), 5 Micrococcus spp. (6,67%), 4 Streptococcus spp. (5,33%), 4 Acinetobacter spp. (5.33%), 3 Neisseria spp. (4.0%), 1 Bacillus spp. (1,33%). 1 S.aureus (1,33%) were identified. This study confirms that aerobic bacteria Isolated from genital tract of healthy bitches at different estrous cycle period do not cause infertility Therefore microbiological examination of vaginal swaps may be necessary in infertil dogs.

Bacteria isolated from sheep with pneumonia and their antibacterial sensitivity from Burdur and Isparta provinces

In this study, it was aimed to isolate the bacteria from sheep with pneumonia in Burdur and İsparta province and to determine of the antibiotic sensitivity. By the aim, a total of 160 lung samples from sheep with pneumonia was collected from Burdur and İsparta province A total of 68 bacterial agents was isolated from the 42 (25.33 %) of 160 sheep lung. Isolated microorganisms were identified as follows: 15 (22.06%) were Pasteurella spp and Staphylococcus aureus. 11 (16.18%) Candida spp., 10 (14.71%) Klebsiella pneumonia, 9 (13.24%) E. coii, 3(4.41%) Streptococcus spp. and Corynebacterium spp. and 2 (2.94%) Enterobacter spp. Antibacterial susceptibility of microorganisms to various antibiotics were tested by Kirby-Bauer disc diffussion methods. Staphylococcus aureus isolates were determined to sensitive 100% oxytetracycline and amoxicillin/klavuianic acid, 93.33% ampicillin, amoxycillin and danofloxacin, Pasteurella spp. strains 100% oxytetracycline, amoxicillin/klavuianic acid, ampicillin, amoxicillin and neomycin, 93.33% danofloxacin, and Klebsiella pneumonia 100% oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, neomycin, gentamicin, sulphamethaksazole/trimethoprime, cefaperazone, 90% amoxicillin / klavulanic acid, ampicillin and danofloxacin.

The Effects of Plant Extract with an Antibacterial Effect (Herbromix®') on some Antioxidants and Blood Parameters in Heat-Stressed Broilers

ln the study the effects of plant extract (Herbromix®) with an antibacterial effect added to ration on some blood parameters and antioxidants were studied in 80 broiler chicks under heat stress. The chicks were divided into four groups as control (K). plant extract (S), stress (S) and stress + plant extract (SB). The study was carried on 45 days. At first 15 days, herbal extract was administrated to P and SP groups. Second 15 days, heat stress (38 -39 C°) was applied to S and SB groups. Plant extract application was carried on during third 15 days. MDA levels increased significantly (p<0.05) in S and SB groups on the 15th day with heat stress. GSH levels significantly decreased in S group compared with the other groups. At the 15th days with the heat stress application, total protein and cholesterol levels were decreased (p<0.05) and glucose levels increased (p<0.05) in S compared with control group. Except of GSH levels there was no differences between S and SB groups in respect of any parameters. In conclusion, the results determined in the study might be important to demonstrate the negative effects of heat stress on some biochemical and antioxidant parameters: however the plant extract administration has no beneficial effect in heat stress.

Bacteriological Quality of Frozen Pikeperch Fish {Stizostedion lucioperca) Fillets Produced in Beyşehir

n this research, eighty frozen Pikeperch fish fillets obtained from five aquaculturat facilities of Beyşehir, Konya with HACCP sertification were analysed for the bacteriological qualities with respect to the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Aqua cultural Regulation The average total aerobic mesophilic, coliform bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus counts were 8.5x10* cfu/g, 44 MPN/g and 3.7x10 cfu/g, respectively. None of the samples contained Escherichia coli. Salmonella spp., Wbrio parahaemolyticus and V. cholera. Of the samples 12.5 % contained coliform bacteria 150-1100 MPN/g and 2.5 % for coliform bacteria counts did not comply the current bacteriological standards In Aquacultural Regulation. In con d u si on, pikeperch fish fillets do not possess any risk for public health in terms of bacterial pathogens, but presence of the coliform bacteria in the samples of 12.5 % indicates that in some aquacultural facilities of Beyşehir has not been possessed of hygienic conditions completely and has not been carried enough sanitation principle.

The Macroanatomy of Vertebral Column and Thorax Skeleton in Chinchillas

ln this study, it was exceminated bones which consisted of the vertebral column and thorax in chinchilla. It was determined that chinchilla had C7,T14,L6,S2,C22 vertebras. Atlas has foramen vertebrale laterale, foramen alare and foramen transversarium. Proccessus transversus of axis is well expanded. It was observed that anticlinal vertebra was 11. vertebra and Processus accessroius was present only in L1-L4 vertebra. Proccessus transversus and corpus of sacral vertebra only were joined one another.lt was found out that ossa arcus hemalis were present ventral aspect of joints which were consisted of vertebra between S2 and S10. The body of the sternum was consisted of 5 sternebras.

The Effects ofEsterified Glucomannan on Some Biochemical Parameters During Experimental Aflatoxicosis in Japanese Quails

ln this study it was aimed to determine protective effects of different doses (1 g/kg and 2 g/kg feed GM) esterified glucomannan (GM) against to experimentally chronic aflatoxicosis (1 mg/kg feed AF) in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). In this study, 10 day old, healthy 240 male Japanese quails were used. These animals were separated equally into six groups. These groups were fed with normal diet (K), the same diet containing 2 mg/kg aflatoxin (AF), 1 g/kg GM (GM1), 2 g/kg GM (GM2), 2 mg/kg aflatoxin + 1 g/kg GM (AF+GM1) and 2 mg/kg aflatoxin + 2 g/kg GM (AF+GM2) for 42 days. In the blood samples taken on the 21st and 42nd day. it was determined decrease in total protein (TP), albumin, tryglyseride, cholesterole, glucose, calcium (Ca). inorganic phosphorus (IP), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and increase in alanineaminotransferase (ALT) and aspartatearninotransferase enzymes activities in the AF ve AF+GM1 groups (P<0.05). TP, albumin, tryglyseride, cholesterole, glucose and BUN levels with ALT and AST activities in the group which administrated 2 g/kg dose GM as adsorbent were significantly different (P<0.05) than that of AF and 1 g/kg GM treatment groups and similar to control group levels. Present study demostrated that of 1 g/kg dose GM application as protective hadn't positive effects while 2 g/kg dose GM treatment caused beneficial effects in respect of many parameters in aflatoxicosis

The Macroanatonıy of External Iliac and Femoral Arteries İn Angora Rabbit

The aim of this study was determined the arterial vascularization of hind limb of Angora rabbit and compared the results with other domestic animals. Material and method: In this study, 10 aduit Angora rabbits (5 male, 5 female) were used. To show vascufar system of hind limb, cadaveric injection was made by using latex. Result: It was determined that external iliac artery originated from common Iliac artery under lumbosacral joint and gave off pudendoepigastric trunk near the inguinal ligament. After this course, it gave off deep femoral artery at beginning of femoral canal and continued its route being femoral artery It was observed that pudendoepigastric trunk gave branches, caudal epigastric artery which supplied abdominal muscles and external pudendal artery which supplied inguinal mamma and scrotum. Deep femoral artery, afier short course from Its origin, was called middle circumflex femoral artery and supplied to proximal part of gracilis, adductor and flexor muscles. Femoral artery branched off lateral circumflex femoral, superficial caudal epigastric and proximal caudal femoral arteries onto proximal part of the femur and dlstally saphenous, middle and distal caudal femoral arteries before continuing as poplitea) artery. Lateral circumflex femoral artery gave branches which were ascending, descending and transversal rami to supply quadriceps femoris, tensor fasciae latae and partially middle and superficial gluteal muscles. Caudal superficial epigastric artery vascularized cutis and subcutis of inguinal region. It was observed that proximal caudal femoral artery supplied gracilis, long and short adductor muscles by sending thin branches. Distal caudal femoral artery was divided into three branches, first branch supplied to biceps lemons muscle, second branch vasculanzed distal one third of semimembranosus, middle part of caudal abductor crural muscle and popliteal lymph node, the last branch spread out gastrocnemius, distal part of caudal abductor crural, superficial flexor digital muscles and common calcaneal tendo. Consequently, it was determined that origin, course and vascularization area of the external iliac artery and Its branches showed fairly similar properties to New Zealand white rabbits. Because of these similarities, all angiologlc applications on the New Zealand white Rabbits can be done also In Angora Rabbits.

Alternative Choosing Problem Based Learning In Veterinary Education

In this article, it is aimed to tell what is PBL, the reason of using it increasingly in veterinary medicine education, advantages and disadvantages of it and in addition, the frame of using force in approaching to learning and teaching.

Maeroan atomic investigations on the skull of Chinchilla lanigera

Aim: The aim of this study was investigated the bones which formed the skull in chinchilla and compared the results with other rodents and same carnivores. Material and method: In this study, 10 adult chinchilla (S female. 5 male) were used. The animals were euthanatized by ordinary methods, Maceration method was used to show skull Result: It was observed that the important features of skull were a wide orbita, long and sharp incisive tooth, and well developed tympanic bulla at the behind of parietal bones. Protuberantia occipitalis externa was well developed and crista facialis was absent. Dental formula was found as II CO P1 M3 in upper and lower jaw. In conclusion, becomes a member of suborder of Rodentia. Chinchilla has nearly same macroanatomic features of bones which consist of skull like their relatives such as Squirrel and Hystrix cristata.

A case of zoonosis ecthyma

The aim of this case report is to show occurred the lesion a person's fingers that were formed after a lamb with a contagious ectima bites him. In routine clinical examination of lamp, small lesions mouth and around were observed along with high temperature. Lamb's the lower respiratory system was to be severely affected. There was also leucocytosis In lamb. Lesions on the fingers were diagnosed as orf by a physician. As a result, contagious ecthyma infection may be contaminated to human by bitten or touching of the infected animal and could cause unwanted lesions In humans.

Investigation of Rotavirus and Coronavirus in Neonatal Diarrheic Calves

Bovine rotavirus (BRV) ve bovine coronavirus (BCV) are the major causes of neonatal calf diarrhea. The objective of this sludy was to determine the prevalence of BRV and BCV In faecal samples from diarrhoeic calves. For this purpose, faecal samples collected from 89 calves with diarrhea in Van province were tested using polyacrylamide gei electrophoresis (PAGE) technique for the presence of BRV and using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit for BCV fn conclusion, out of the 89 diarrhoeic calves, 16 (17.97%) were found to be positive for rotavirus and only 1 (1,12%) for coronavirus. These findings provide evidence for BRV and BCV in aetiology of neonatal calf diarrhea cases.
